Drop-In Center (1st January 2009 -> present)
The second phase of the project is the opening of a Drop-In Center. This is a day center offering more activities with more structure. This centre will bridge the gap between street life and life in the center. Rules and consequences will be made by the children and they are free to come and go as they please. An emergency medical room is open on 24 hour.
The reason the center will not immediately offer residence is that both children and staff need to work out and respect boundaries. Staff needs to feel able to handle all sorts of challenging situations, and children need to begin to come to terms with living by the rules they make and handling the consequences they set.
Too many projects worldwide have failed by opening a residential center immediately as an instinctive measure to serve the desperate needs of the children. The children have acquired numerous methods of survival on the streets; they are generally extremely well organised and very astute. The time taken building trust with them through outreach activities is what we believe will guarantee the longevity of their stay within the center and thus a more secure future.
