Salam Project for Street Children started in 2007 with a tiny team of just 2 social workers out on the streets making contact with vulnerable children and youth. In 2 years, the team has grown to 26 members.
The project is comprised of various services, developed to address the needs identified for marginalised street children and youth, their families and communities. The services include a Drop-In Center, an Outreach team, a Residential Shelter (to open January 2010), a Reintegration (Case-Management) Team, Drug Rehabilitation, Vocational Training and a Home Based Production project (on hold).
We have built a part of these services, and continue to build on them to develop the project further, moving slowly to ensure a sustainable and worthwhile venture. We have learnt that training, with constant follow-up, produces results, and that a strong managerial staff are the key to a successful project.
